PART FOUR
Beyond the Peaks of Throk
Subduing his raging fury as best he could, yet totally incapable of curbing the sick feeling of horror that lay thick in his stomach like bile - horror for Tiania in the clutches of that flying beast-thing that soared somewhere ahead in the darkness over the desert - Titus Crow leaned into the wind and rode his cloak like a great bat through the night. He followed the occasional shriek from Tiania, dread draining him every time he heard her cry out, until at last he realized that she was deliberately screaming, creating a trail by means of which he could follow the flightpath of the great night-gaunt.
And it dawned on him too that, plucky girl though she was, she might save some of her breath for later - when perhaps they might both have more need of screaming. Indeed, the flight of the night-gaunt seemed arrow-straight, and Crowâs instinct told him where the beast was headed. Then, as its outline momentarily obliterated a great whorl of stars hanging low in the sky ahead, he caught a glimpse of the thing and knew he had been correct. Unlike its cousins, the common gaunts, by virtue of its gigantic size, nevertheless this faceless terror of the night made for a region of dreamland where Titus Crow knew that the lesser gaunts proliferated. He put on a burst of speed to shorten, if possible, the monsterâs lead.
Out over the Southern Sea sped the great gaunt, and far below Tiania could see all the stars of the night sky reflected in black mirror waters. Normally she would have found such a sight beautiful indeed, but now, dangling from the rubbery paws of this clammy creature as it
soared silently through the upper air of dreamland, she shuddered and cried out yet again. She knew that Titus Crow must be somewhere behind the great night-gaunt, knew too that her cries must eventually guide him to her; for while the gaunt could not fly on forever, Crowâs cloak was utterly tireless.
Behind her now, Tiania could make out the dim lights of small towns spread along the coast of the Southern Sea, and briefly from far below there came drifting the song of a lone fisherman at the helm of his night-becalmed vessel. Doubtless he was singing to ward off the dark spirits of the night waters, which legend had it walked on the glassy surface of the deep when the nights were calm.
